JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- The founder of a popular local barbecue restaurant has died.

Melton Jenkins Jr. of Jenkins Quality Barbecue died at his home about 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to his family.

Jenkins Quality Barbecue has been a staple in Jacksonville for more than 55 years.

Jenkins Jr., a native of Jacksonville, established Jenkins Quality Barbecue in 1957 with just $125.

Jenkins' daughter Meltonia Jenkins-DuBois told Action News he had been bedridden for more than 10 years. His daughters are carrying on the family business.

Jenkins barbecue has three locations in Jacksonville.
