JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Skeeters, skeeters, everywhere! it's a problem Floridians are used to, but not always at the beginning of February.

"Whenever it's warm, we're going to have them no matter what," Zachary Guven said.

Jacksonville's Mosquito Control Division has stayed busy during the winter months, which is uncommon. Normally, cold temperatures make the pests dormant, but since there hasn't been much of that, they're managing to survive.

"It's been much, much milder. Warner. So, adult mosquitoes are able to winter over," John Shellhorn said.

Division Chief John Shellhorn says February or not, they're being proactive. Crews are out checking creeks and responding to neighborhoods when necessary. The only saving grace has been the lack of rain. The less water mosquitoes have to breed in, the better it is for everyone.

"It all boils down to meteorological conditions," he continued.

Last year there was a record number of West Nile cases in Duval County. Two people died and numerous others got sick. Shellhorn says folks can help by turning over pots and being on the lookout for stagnant water. If you notice a big problem, you can even call the city at 904-630-CITY.

"They can help us and can help themselves by looking around their house," he said.
