Storm Spinning in the Far E. Atlantic; Some Convection in the Caribbean; "Gordon" 18 Years Ago......
Convection (t'storms) has been slowly increasing over parts of the Central & Southern Caribbean but tropical development is not likely anytime soon. A storm system continues to move east over & near the Cape Verde Islands off the African coast but is not tropical & strong west/southwest shear should preclude development.
It was during this week in 1994 that an interesting tropical (& at times subtropical) "Gordon" affected parts of the Caribbean & Florida. The storm nailed Fl. 3 times -- the Keys, Ft. Myers then curling back to Fl. near Cape Canaveral after already crossing the state once. The storm was fascinating & devastating all at the same time. "Gordon" only briefly reached hurricane strength while east of Fl. over the gulf stream. But storm caused flooding & mudslides that killed 1,000+ in Hispaniola. Several tornadoes were spawned in Fl. along with severe beach erosion. "Gordon" was also interesting in that it became subtropical for a time in the SW Atlantic before becoming tropical
