Atlantic wave... Pacific has peaked

Convection has waned.  The combination of an upper low & tropical wave is not too far from Bermuda but little development is likely as it turns more northeast with time over the open Atlantic.

A very quiet -- hardly even any cloud cover -- Gulf of Mexico...

Sometimes meteorologists use "telleconnections" to try to come up with a general long range forecast for potential tropical development.  A new storm -- "Francisco" -- has formed near Guam, & the typhoon will toward Japan through early next week but weakening upon approach to the island.  We need to watch for potential tropical development in or near the Caribbean &/or SW Atlantic within the next couple weeks though forecast models are showing nothing of the sort.  Surface pressures remain generally low & sea surface temps. are plenty warm.

"Francisco" (map courtesy Weather Underground):

Parts of Japan are still reeling from a deluge from typhoon "Whipa".  The storm dumped more than 30" of rain south & southwest of Tokyo in just 24 hours!  Click ** here ** for the news story.  The imagery below is from the CIMMS blog (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies) & shows "Whipa" merging with a cold front upon approach to Japan -- a deadly combination that produced flooding rains & mudslides.
