JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Katie Uibel will make her acting debut this weekend. She's competing in the 48-Hour Film Project.
"It's creative, it's different," says Uibel, a student at River City Science Academy. "I'm excited to try new things."
There are 45 teams competing. Uibel and her classmates call themselves Rocket Productions. They have from 7pm on Friday until 7pm on Sunday to write, shoot and edit a film, no longer than seven minutes.
As if that's not a big enough challenge, the teams can't plan or write any of the movie ahead of time. The genre is left up to chance. There was a drawing on Friday night and each team picked a piece of paper out of a bowl with a genre -- horror, comedy, romance, among other genres.
Uibel's team must make a silent movie. Their teacher, Adam Suslak, says a lot of hard work has been put into planning for the 48 hours of production.
"We have been preparing. We've been having meetings during lunch and getting all the equipment together," Suslak told Action News.
The films will be screened on Tuesday night, Wednesday night and Thursday night of next week at The Florida Theatre. The screenings start at 7pm. The price is $15 for adults and $10 for students when purchased at Florida Theatre box office.
The best film from Jacksonville will be awarded a copy of Movie Magic Screenwriter Software, a trophy and screened at the 48 Hour Film Project Filmapalooza in 2013. The top 12 films globally will screen at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner.
