BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- For the first time Monday, the two teen suspects charged with the murder of a Brunswick baby stood before a judge.

DeMarquis Elkins, 17, and Dominique Lang, 15, made their first appearances in court as the accused killers of a 13-month-old boy.

Police say Elkins and Lang killed the baby in a botched robbery attempt. It's a crime that's shaken this small Georgia community to its core and led to Internet death threats.

Elkins' attorney Kevin Gough said, "People are advocating on the Internet that Marquis be lynched, tortured, or at least executed."

Lang's grandmother, who identified herself only as Pastor Hunt, said of her grandson, "He's a baby. But he's not a baby killer. So they need to get this straight. He is not a baby killer."

Gough denies Elkins had any gang affiliation, and says he's not aware of any prior criminal history.

He suggests that it's possible Elkins and Lang were misidentified by a grieving mother. He says there are a lot of things we still don't know about this case.

He said, "It does seem odd that the young man who was determined to take a purse and the contents of a purse would shoot a 13-month-old child once in the head, and shoot at the mother several times, and yet the purse was never taken."

Both suspects are being held without bond. Elkins' next court date is April 5. A preliminary hearing is still being planned for Lang.
