JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- There is a new debate over the gas tax in Duval County.
Every time drivers fill up they pay extra taxes in Duval County. Action News has learned Mayor Alvin Brown wants the 6 cent gas tax in Duval County to expire.
He faces a battle though. We found out City Council President Bill Gulliford plans to file for an extension of that tax next week. "If we eliminated the tax, do you really think the price of gas would go down 6 cents. If you do, you probably think Elvis is still alive," said Gulliford.
The tax brings in just under $30 million a year in Duval County. Gulliford wants that to continue, but he wants to move that money to go JTA to do transportation projects. Some of those projects are from the Better Jacksonville Plan. There are several projects that never got done because there is no money in the fund.
In a statement from the mayor, he said, "Taxpayers already have contributed greatly to our road system." The tax is set to expire in 2016.
