ORANGE PARK Fla.-- A small vehicle will save Clay County big bucks in the next year. The Clay County Sheriff's Office is using a new golf cart donated to them by the Eagle Landing Homeowners' Association to have volunteers patrol OakLeaf Plantation.
"This program does not cost the taxpayers of Clay County any money," said Sheriff Rick Beseler.
In fact, Sheriff Beseler says the cart will cut down on costs for taxpayers; no more paying for gas with the electric carts or paying for patrol units in the area anymore.
Right now there are a total of eight Clay County Sheriff's volunteers on golf carts throughout the county, all donated by local businesses and homeowners associations, all with a proven track record of success.
"We have stopped vandalism in certain areas, we have stopped speeding cars," said Beseler.
The volunteers are highly trained and go through a strict screening process.
"It's one of the most important things to me to make sure this community is well protected," said volunteer, Jim Moore.
