GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla.-- From divorces to murder, you name it, the Clay County Courthouse handles it.
All kinds of people walk through its doors-- which is why security is a concern.
"It's our job as a Sheriff's Office to make sure that all parties involved, no matter what side of the table you're sitting on, leave that courthouse in a safe and secure manner," Col. Craig Aldrich said.
During a recent overhaul process, some things were noticed that needed to be buttoned up. Right now, not everyone is required to go through the medal detector. A small number of employees are allowed to go through the check points. Colonel Craig Aldrich says a committee is being formed to discuss issues like that and make a change.
"We feel that we could tweek it, fine tune it a little more," Aldrich continued.
Amanda Latvenas says she's looks forward to the new measures. Where she goes, she wants to feel safe. Period.
"I've never had problems, but I would feel more secure if they did have more security. But yeah, they should have more security," she said.
These are some of the items that have made it through the courthouse doors. They were all caught by X-ray machines and medal detectors, which aren't cheap. Each piece of equipment can range from $2,000 to $7,000.
The Sheriff's Office says more may have to be purchased, but regardless of price tag-- protecting people always has been and always will be top priority.
"Box cutters, tasers, ammunition, scissors. It runs the gammet. We're doing our part to keep all of that out. I think the public will be pleased with our efforts," Aldrich said.
Each year, the Clay County Courthouse sees about 162,000 visitors. The heaviest flow is the morning.
