JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Every day life puts us on the clock. Ryan Keith knows his time is running out.
"It was like man, I'm going to die," said Keith recently. "You hear that you have three to five years and you know you've already spent some of that. There's not much left."
Ryan Keith has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: ALS. It's a muscle disease known more commonly as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
"There's no family history of any neurological diseases at all," said Keith. "It just happened."
Keith is the head football coach at Eagle's View Academy. He's in his sixth year as head coach and was diagnosed with ALS right after his first season.
It's a disease that is unforgiving. Moment by moment, Keith loses control of his muscles but not control of his mind or emotions. He knows everything that is happening.
"I'm happy to be alive," says Keith. "There's nothing I'm doing that's keeping me alive. It's God."
On the football field, Keith is still coach to the players. He's modified his routines.
Keith drives around practice in a golf cart and at the end of the season he was coaching games from the press box.
"Every morning the kids take my bags in," said Keith. "I pull up and they don't even ask. They just grab my bags and go in. They're intelligent. They sense there is something wrong."
The school is building a new field and they hope to have it ready by next fall. It will be named for Ryan Keith.
"I haven't done much," says Keith. "Time moves on and people move on."
The days are moving too fast for Ryan Keith, but his legacy will always be frozen in time.
