LAKE BUTLER Fla. -- John Griffis and his son John Jr., are pleading with the community to save their cousin David's life.

"I really wouldn't want to attend a funeral," he said.

Father David Griffis, 44, has been clinging to life since police say he was shot by he former co-worker Hubert Allen Jr. at Pritchett Trucking Saturday morning.  He was in surgery at UF Health Gainesville all day Sunday. His family said he's been losing blood faster than physicians can replenish it.

His life is in the hands of the community and all the blood they can donate.

"Every bit counts," he said.

Adam and Lisa Page, pastors at Christ Central Church, turned their monthly effort to give blood into something bigger on Sunday. It became a blood drive for Griffis.

"We call it to save a life Sunday and it just happened to fall on when all this tragedy had taken place, so we're just believing for the community to come out and partner in and help all the victims," said Pastor Adam Page

The community came out in droves. More than 60 bags of blood were brought to UF Health for Griffis Sunday afternoon, but with more surgeries ahead of him, his family says he still needs more.

"Thank you to everybody, I mean anybody and everybody even if anybody shows up right now it's greatly appreciated," said Griffis.

If you would like to donate to Griffis, visit a blood bank nearby and specify that the blood is for him.
