JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The owner of an unlicensed daycare center, charged in the death of a 2-year-old boy, has appeared in court.

Jan Buchanan is charged of aggravated manslaughter and running an unlicensed daycare.

It's been a week since 2-year-old Steven Spurlock fell in a pool at the unlicensed daycare, Kiddie Heaven.  He died a few days later from his injuries.

Police say Buchanan's home would not have passed inspection. "She didn't lock the gate on the pool and she also had a pool alarm which she did not set so three things right there that could have prevented this death," said Lt. Rob Schoonover with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Many parents believed this daycare was legitimate, including Stephen's parents. It even had a professional website. But experts say never judge a book by its cover. Before you enroll your child, check with the state.

Buchanan will be back in court on June 19.
