Duval County issues first rabies alert of the year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Duval County’s first rabies alert of the year has been issued for the Ortega area of Jacksonville. The alert comes after a rabid bat was found there.

The impacted area is bordered on the north by Lancelot Lane at Water Oak Lane, on the south by St. Johns Avenue at Herschel Street, on the west by Lakeshore Boulevard at Fremont Street, and east at the St. Johns River. 

As a precaution, pet owners should supervise their pets while they are outside, and make sure all pets are current on rabies immunization shots. The alert is in effect through May 6, 2013.
