FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- Neighbors in Fernandina Beach say the closure of one local post office means the closure of a piece of history. There's no written warning, but in 30 days, the United States Post Office sign will come down.

"I think it's one of the stupidest things they've done in Fernandina in a good while," said longtime resident, Eva Boles.

Not one person we spoke to was happy about it, either. In 1912, the structure went up and is considered a historic landmark today.

"I know the city wants to use it for some other reason but it's a great post office, and speaking for the downtown business people, they want it here," said customer Tony McAdoo.

However, that's not enough to keep it open. Action News found out the Centre Road post office would cost $3 million to bring up to code. As the U.S. Postal Service looks to close a large hole in its budget, we're told forking out that kind of money for one location isn't feasible, especially with another one nearby.

"I'm moving my box right now from the old post office to this new post office, we're having to do that until the 10th of next month," said another customer, Clifford Evans.

Those who won't accept it can file an appeal with the Postal Regulatory Commission, something Eva Boles says she is already looking into.

"I wrote a letter and told them to get the heck out of Dodge. Just leave our post office alone," said Boles.

Closing the post office could be delayed by 120 days if someone does decide to file an appeal.

Action News called the Postal Service on Monday for comment; we are still waiting on a call back.
