BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- According to the U.S. flag code, it's the sign for distress and danger. And you can find the inverted flag on an invitation from the Glynn County Republican Party.
"It was exactly what I intended to say," said Jeff Kilgore.
Kilgore is the Vice-Chairman for the party in Brunswick. And he said he didn't think twice about using the flipped flag. "The amount of money that is being spent in this country is outrageous, and we can't afford it," he said.
The notice was emailed out Tuesday to invite party members to the monthly breakfast. But critics say the symbol is flat out disrespectful.
Kilgore says he is just exercising his First Amendment right. "If you spread out the national debt evenly then every man, woman and child in this country owes over $300,000. I consider that a crisis."
No one wanted to comment on camera, but several Brunswick residents did say the invitation desecrates the American flag.
Kilgore is just glad it’s getting people talking. "If we don't pay attention to what our elected officials are doing, than we will lose this country."
Jeff Kilgore says the inverted flag was purely his opinion, and not the shared opinion of the Glynn County Republican Party.
