JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- A time of celebration turned into a time of torment for one Northside neighborhood when a home fell victim to gunfire on New Year's Eve.

A mother on 28th Street was shaken by bullets that pierced her home and her windows.

"Just a lot of gunshots," she said. "There were so many I don't know where they were coming from. I just know they were close, they were really, really close."

Living in fear, the mother did not want to reveal her identity, but she's telling her story in hopes that she can help put a stop to senseless crime in her community.

"That is my cry in the community that I live in," she said. "Innocent people are dying, kids are dying, people are being hurt for no reason. What happened to conflict resolution, why does it have to be a weapon or a bullet?"

She says it's only by the grace of God that her children ,who were all home at the time, are safe.

"My family could have been burying somebody," she said. "They could have been burying me, but thank God, I am very thankful I am still here."

She hopes her sobering start to the new year is a lesson for the rest of her neighborhood.

"My prayer is that 2013 will be a different year, a different season and a change for people that want change."

The incident remains under investigation.
