JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- A community is mourning the murder of a local man of God.

There are tears in their eyes and pain in the hearts but the church congregation still has something to sing about. The murder of apostle J.H. Bowser is still very much on their minds but assistant pastor Michael Girard says they'll always remember their church's founder. "We're going to miss him but we have to be strong and work through it. It's a process not an easy one," said Assistant Pastor Michael Girard.

Apostle Bowser was found dead in his kitchen Tuesday. Police say Terrance Wright hit him in the head with a hammer. The Apostle's grandson took the news hard, having just seen him the night before. "I'm glad I spent time with him and wish I'd spent more time," said his grandson.

Police say Wright killed the Apostle over money so he could buy drugs. Family members tell us the Apostle had helped Wright out with money before, even offering the suspect odd jobs at times.

Action News checked into Wright’s  past. We found an arrest on drug charges in 2009 and a petty theft charge in 2012. Jail records show Wright only got of jail a couple weeks ago.

But while the pain is still raw, a pastor preached forgiveness and love, saying  that's what their Apostle has taught them. "It isn't the reason why is that's something the pastor wholeheartedly taught," said Pastor Girard.

Right now the suspect, Terrence Wright, is in jail charged with murder.
