MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- Health experts say getting a flu shot is the best preventative measure to fight the flu. A local man says the shot would have saved his wife's life.
Charlie Huggins wasn't prepared to say a final goodbye to his beloved wife, Barbara. "I told her I loved her, gave her a kiss goodbye on the steps as they walked her down the steps, put her in an ambulance. That was the last time I spoke to her."
A string of the flu claimed the life of 66-year-old Barbara Huggins January 6. Her husband says it's still hard to believe that he is now without his soulmate.
"The impact of losing a spouse is tremendous. I didn't have any idea how it would impact me."
Huggins says his wife was healthy; never drank or smoked. But when she got the flu, it left her susceptible to pneumonia. The combination proved to be deadly.
"In 48 hours she goes from healthy to dead, I mean that quick."
He tried to talk Barbara into getting a flu shot just weeks before she got sick. He's convinced it would have saved her life.
Now he's advocating everyone take the necessary precautions to fight the flu.
"I just pray that somebody hears the cry and goes and gets the flu shot because it's too easy to do nowadays."
