ST. AUGUSTINE Fla.-- The tragic death of two local newlyweds has many taking a hard look at the spot where they died. Many say a dangerous curve where driver Trevor Leonardi lost control on A1A is dangerous.
For Surf Station manager Rachel Bardin, whose shop is right along the so-called dangerous curve, the tragic Christmas Day crash that killed a newlywed couple is haunting. It brings back memories of a fatal accident right in her store. A car burst through the shop's front door five years ago.
"We still have some pieces of their car left over," said Bardin.
Bardin believes this curve is to blame, one that's so sharp and sudden on A1A that police tell Action News that four people have died there in the past two decades. Bardin says she's seen many more get hurt.
"It's sort of like a regular occurrence," she said. "I think the weirdest thing I ever saw was someone pulling out and they had like a trailer or something on the back of their car and their trailer just flipped over."
Now Bardin is one of many locals that want to see a change.
"I think something to get drivers' attention, maybe some sort of flashing light would probably be ideal," she said.
Other A1A business owners in the area seem to agree; a traffic light could prevent future fatalities.
"We're talking about a light, we're talking about some taxes, we are already paying for," said local business owner Matt Kafisco. "There's no reason why we shouldn't have it."
For Bardin it's about protecting her patrons. She says she wants a light installed before someone else gets hurt.
