Jacksonville, Fla.-- Action News has learned a city councilman is looking for a new plan to get the Equestrian Center making money.
Action News has learned city leaders are looking for a way to start making money on the $22 million building. It's nearly 10 years old and was built under the Better Jacksonville Plan. There is a big gap in what taxpayers paid for the building and how much the building has made.
In the past three years, the center brought in less than $1 million. In addition to the $22 million to build it, taxpayers paid for $18 million in capital improvements.
Councilman Doyle Carter agrees, and says taxpayers need to see a reason to keep the center open. That's why he's putting out a request for proposals. He wants ideas to get the momentum back behind the center.
"Maybe we can come in and get momentum back," said Carter.
He even thinks turning it into a non profit might be another idea. "There's got to be more events, and to get horsing events there the way it should be going," said Carter.
There is an event going on there this weekend. The RV Mega Show runs through Sunday.
