LAKE CITY, Fla. -- Charges have been filed against a man in the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy in Lake City earlier this month.
Police filed charges of aggravated manslaughter against 25-year-old Michael Norman.
Police say he was babysitting a group of children at the Cedar Park Apartments on May 11. Norman told police that he went to bed around 3 a.m. and left a Ruger 9 mm handgun on the kitchen table.
The children were all asleep at the time. He woke up at 8 a.m. to the sound of a gunshot, and rushed to the living room where he found Jarvin Jackson, 11, on the floor unresponsive, and a 2-year-old and 4-year-old girl standing nearby.
Investigators say the 4-year-old girl woke up and found the 2-year-old girl playing with the gun. The girls started playing with the gun together when it went off.
The bullet hit Jarvin in the neck. He died two days later. The 4-year-old girl suffered injuries to her face from the recoil after the gun fired.
"It is truly a sad time in Lake City that this innocent child has lost his life due to the entire circumstances surround the manner in which this child was taken from our community," said Lake City Police Chief Argatha Gilmore.
Norman told police he bought the gun from a man on the street in White Springs.
He's also been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm with altered serial numbers.
