JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Investigators say a man jumped from the 16th floor of the Hyatt hotel Saturday night.
He's been identified as 39-year-old Clint Aaron Hobbs.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, it happened around 7 p.m. just as two local high schools were gearing up to host their events.
Mandarin High School students arrived dressed in tuxedos and gowns for their prom while former Landon High School students got together for their reunion.
One witness tells Action News she happened to be walking by the hotel toward The Landing when she heard a loud noise.
"Out of the corner of my eye I saw something fall and hollered a horrific noise that I'll never forget," said Stephanie Hamilton, witness.
Detectives say the man fell into the valet parking area and landed on the trunk of a parked car.
For hours the entrance of the hotel was blocked off as police removed the man's body. High schoolers arriving for prom were brought inside through a different door.
"We've diverted them to the side entrance so they're not coming up to the front," said Sgt. Jay Farhat, JSO.
According to Farhat, the man appears to have had a history of mental illness.
No one on the ground was hurt.
A witness tells Action News, about 10 people saw the incident, some of which were high school students.
A spokesperson with the Duval County School Board says the needed Support Services will be made available to students and personnel who saw the tragedy.
