Man shot by Deputy at Orange Park apartment complex
ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A Clay County man is in critical condition after being shot by a deputy at an Orange Park apartment complex.
The Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to a call of a man acting suicidal at an Orange Park apartment complex shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday. The complex is at 351 Crossings Blvd.
Investigators say the deputy was approached by 26-year-old Nicholas R. Cannady with a gun outside the apartment in a breezeway. That's when, according to Clay County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Mary Justino, CCSO Deputy Reginald Hyatt fired three shots at Cannady.
Cannady was taken to Orange Park Medical Center and is now in critical condition.
Deputy Hyatt was not hurt. He is now on paid administrative leave as is protocol with a deputy shooting.
The FDLE is investigating the shooting. The CCSO says they are not sure if the Cannady ever fired his weapon.
