JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mayor Alvin Brown is calling on the city residents to give local dogs a second chance at life.
Animal Care and Protective Services has 90 dogs that are ready for adoption. The animals are taking up space the shelter needs to house animals that are lost or need medical attention.
"We believe each of these animals deserves to have a nice, loving home," said Mayor Alvin Brown. "It's taken a lot of hard work for this city to reach a no-kill status and we want to make sure we keep it that way. We're asking the community to step up and help. If you've ever thought about adding a dog to your family, now is an excellent time."
The city shelter is trying to return to "no-kill" status as it has achieved in recent months. That means at least 90 percent of animals brought into the shelter live, usually by being adopted out.
ACPS is running an adoption special. Until the end of February, dogs and cats will cost just $14. That includes spaying or neutering, rabies vaccinations and microchipping. There is also a $20 licensing fee. Regular adoption hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
