Moderate rip current risk at area beaches
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- A medium rip current risk will affect area beaches until at least Sunday evening. The combination of increased swells and southeasterly winds are responsible for the treacherous surf.
Rip currents can become life-threating to swimmers.
The National Weather Service advises that only experienced swimmers should enter the water until conditions improve.
If caught in a rip current, do not panic. Remain calm and begin to swim parallel to shore. Once you are away from the rip current, begin to swim back to the beach. Do not try to swim against the rip current, because you will likely become exhausted.
