ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. -- A pair of Alachua County School crossing guards lost their lives in a mid-week traffic crash while off-duty.

Wilbur Barlow, 76, and his wife, Julia Barlow, 77 were traveling down a rural Levy County roadway when they struck a tractor-trailer that was in the process of leaving the CR 335, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Law enforcement reports that the Barlows died at the scene.

Julia Barlow was recently named the Alachua County Crossing Guard of the Year at a ceremony in early February.

The Barlows had been School Crossing Guards since 2004 & 2005 respectively.

Memorial arrangements have not been released.

Charges are pending the outcome of the crash investigation.
