JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A spokesperson for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says one person has died in a police shooting on the Southside.
Police say a man injured his stepfather at a home inside the Countryside Village neighborhood Friday evening.
"He ambushed his stepfather. Waited for him inside the home and then stabbed him," said Chief Tom Hackney.
Hackney says the suspect then barricaded himself inside, and threatened to harm himself.
Hackney says three responding officers determined the SWAT team needed to be called, but before that happened, the suspect emerged armed with a weapon. Police say the officers were forced to fire their department issued AR15's, hitting the suspect multiple times and killing him at the scene.
Hackney says it appears to be an instance of "suicide by cop."
Police have not released the name of the suspect who was killed in the standoff. His step-father is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.
