YULEE, Fla. -- In moments of crises, every second matters. And in Northeast Florida, the difference between life and death could be a phone call.
"Information is everything," said Nassau's Emergency Management Director, Danny Hinson.
Hinson manages Code Red for Nassau County. It's a reverse 9-1-1 system that will call you in an emergency. It's the same system used in every county in Northeast Florida.
"You have the selection of getting an email, text or voice alert. And that's how we can send out mass notification," he said.
A similar system was reportedly used during Newtown's school shooting to help parents of survivors reunite with their children.
"They can send over 60,000 calls an hour," said Hinson.
Code Red was used when the St. Marys River flooded after Tropical Storm Debby, but Hinson said he is prepared to use it if a school shooting happened there.
"It's not just telling parents what is happening. They want to know where to go, what to do, and how do they find out information," said Hinson.
It's valuable information sent out quickly with just a few clicks of a mouse during a moment when every second matters.
