JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office will begin installing red light cameras at busy intersections including Baymeadows Road and Southside Boulevard.
Starting Monday, red light cameras will be installed at 17 different intersections in Jacksonville. That means drivers who run a red light could get a ticket in the mail for $158.
JSO says the goal is to reduce traffic crashes. While that may be so, some drivers are fighting back. In several cities around the state, drivers are fighting the tickets and winning. From July 2011 to June 2012, 20,000 Floridians challenged their ticket, and 70% of them had their cases dismissed.
Sheriff Rutherford says the system in Jacksonville won't be so easy to fight. First of all, he says only a sworn police officer will review the video and issue a ticket. Along with that, drivers will be able to actually watch their violations online.
