JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 3-year-old is fighting for her life in the hospital after she was hit by a car on Lem Turner Rd. Community members are calling for changes in the area to keep kids safe.
The accident on Lem Turner Rd. Thursday hit close to home for neighbor, Jordan Young. It was a tragic reminder to always keep a watchful eye on his young one. "You'll do anything to keep that person safe by any means."
Even if that means he has to pass up a shortcut on his way to the grocery store. Young isn't the only dad keeping his kids off Lem Turner.
Alan Crumley and his two sons pulled into Kendall Court apartments just after Khelis Brown was hit by a car. According to police, her grandfather let go of her hand and allowed the toddler to cross the street on her own. Neighbors who know the man say they see the two often on walks around the neighborhood. Police say the grandfather could face charges for child neglect.
Crumley says the bigger issue for the neighborhood is that kids are constantly crossing the busy road to get home at Kendall Court. Community members recently drafted a petition to the city requesting safeguards for the area.
"If they don't put a light here they need some type of school crossing or something more safer to cross the street," said Crumley.
The Department of Children and Families is also investigating the accident. DCF is looking into whether or not Brown was living in a safe home-environment.
