BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. -- Schools will be closed in Brantley County for the second straight day on Wednesday, due to stormy weather.
The school district's superintendent tells Action News, after seven inches of rain fell Monday, road conditions are unsafe for school buses.
"I had a question posed earlier, what about alternate routes? Well, all the alternate routes are dirt roads also," said Superintendent Read Carter.
The rain has turned many of the 479 miles of dirt road into mud.
County crews put clay down on the dirt roads to help firm the soft sand during the summer. But after it rains, the clay turns it into mush.
"Feels kinda like mashed potatoes when you step on the clay. It's real slick, real soft," said Brantley County Sheriff Jack Whisenant.
Emergency Management officials closed 16 roads across the county.
Bill Rowell is moving his things to higher ground. He's lived along the Satilla River on Warner's Landing for 22 years.
"I'm the lowest place down here. So I'm the first to get wet and the last to get dry," said Rowell.
Low-lying roads, like Warner's Landing, are washed out thanks to the river which is now an estimated 13 feet above flood level.
The sheriff says the slick, soft consistency on roadways poses problems for deputies responding to an emergency.
"It makes it rough at times, makes it hard for school buses to get in and out, emergency vehicles to get in and out, so it's a problem."
It's problematic for people like Rowell, who now have to rely on boats for transportation.
Classes in Brantley County are expected to resume Thursday.
