JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Nathan Lynn spent more than a year in Iraq with the Army National Guard.

"I was an infantryman, so basically we would go out on foot patrols," he said.

He risked his life every day.  "You go out and you never know if you're going to come back."

One day, some of his friends didn't.  "Unfortunately, I lost seven guys in my unit when I was over there."

And Lynn was hurt.  "Shrapnel wound to the face from a bullet that struck my rifle scope," he said.

He got better, came back home, moved to Jacksonville, and got some help from the Wounded Warrior Project.

"They basically do a lot of rehabilitative programs.  And their biggest thing is to honor and empower veterans," he said.

The organization empowered him by getting him into college, where he's studying to become a mental health counselor for other veterans.  "It's a very smooth transition for a guy that's never been in school.  Or been out of school for ten years to get into an educational program and to be successful."

Now, Lynn is returning the favor, running to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, in an upcoming 8k race around Jacksonville.

"It's extremely motivational," he said.

Something to think about between your cookouts and fireworks.  Remembering the sacrifice of veterans, and what they did to keep America free.

Lynn said, "It's a great day to spend time with your family and think about more than just grilling out and having a good time.  It's so much more than that for many of us."

The Wounded Warrior Project Project 8K Run happens September 7th.   Advanced registration is $25, $15 for veterans.  It's one of the main fundraisers for the organization, benefiting programs that get veterans higher education, rehab, and jobs.
