JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's hard to believe, but Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away. "Thanksgiving is as early as it ever is this year," said Area Commander, Major Dean Hinson.
That gives the Salvation Army of Northeast Florida just a few days to come up with more than 900 turkeys.
Every year they hand out the birds and all the fixings to families in need. And for most of them, it's the only way they can celebrate. "It's a tangible way for people to pitch in and help. When they buy their turkey, if they can buy a turkey, it helps us," he said.
They will also fill their dinning room at least four times that night to feed as many people in the community as possible. "People that don't want to spend Thanksgiving alone. People that are hungry. They can join in with the family here," said Major Hinson.
But it can only happen with your help. The Salvation Army hopes to have all 900 turkeys by Saturday. That gives them Sunday and Monday to sort the food.
So they can hand it all out Tuesday.
"We need the community just to think about others as they prepare for their own Thanksgiving," he said.
The Salvation Army needs to get at least 150 turkeys a day to reach their goal by Saturday. It's a big goal that they are thankful to reach every year because of you.
