ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A scooter driver was seriously injured late Friday along U.S. 1 after being involved in a wrong-way crash.

St. Johns County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Kelshaw tells Action News the scooter was traveling southbound in a northbound lane of the highway when the man was forced to swerve because of on-coming traffic.

A pick-up driver traveling northbound attempted to avoid the man on the scooter by swerving left into the median. The driver of the scooter was struck by the truck.

The driver of the scooter was flown to Shands Jacksonville with serious injuries. Police say he does not have a valid driver's license.  The case is being actively investigated as a DUI by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
