JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Right this minute, part of a Westside neighborhood is blocked off as police search for clues in an early morning shooting.

This is all happening in the Westchase Court Apartments off 103rd Street on the Westside.

Neighbor Steve Eagle says the sound of gunfire and the glare of police lights woke him up.  But he says that's nothing new around here.  "You hear gunfire quite a bit here," he said.

Police were called to the apartments around 6:40 a.m.  They say they found Gregory Martin, 28, lying on the ground.  He had been shot several times, in the chest and in the legs.  But by the time police arrived, the shooter was long gone.

Sgt. Dan Janson with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said, "Right now there's a subject outstanding.  We don't have any indication who it may be.  He didn't give us any indication it may be."

So all day long, detectives have been searching for answers.  They say the victim left here in critical condition.  And if he doesn't pull through, the search for a shooter will turn in to a search for a killer, making nervous neighbors even more uneasy.

"It's not a good place here," said Eagle.  "A lot of drugs."

If you know anything about what happened there, you can make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.  You will remain anonymous and could receive a cash reward of up to $1,000.
