JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Road crews were spotted along Riverside Avenue on Wednesday, replacing sharrow signs that disappeared four months ago.

On Monday, Action News went to state and city officials for answers on why they were never replaced. A subcontractor was hired to repave the road in July, after JEA completed a utility project. The sharrows could have been repainted 30 days later, but weren’t until two days after our story aired.

Local bicyclists tell us they are happy to see action, but some were also concerned that these new signs were not placed up to code.

We called the Florida Department of Transportation and city for copies the current design standards:

03 Shared Lane Markings shall not be used on shoulders or in designated bicycle lanes.
04 If used in a shared lane with on-street parallel parking, Shared Lane Markings should be placed so that the centers of the markings are at least 11 feet from the face of the curb, or from the edge of the pavement where there is no curb.
05 If used on a street without on-street parking that has an outside travel lane that is less than 14 feet wide, the centers of the Shared Lane Markings should be at least 4 feet from the face of the curb, or from the edge of the pavement where there is no curb.
06 If used, the Shared Lane Marking should be placed immediately after an intersection and spaced at intervals not greater than 250 feet thereafter.

Action News found the new signs appear to be in compliance with the above standards.

The subcontractors deadline to finish painting these sharrows would have been this Friday, according to the FDOT.

After this deadline, the FDOT will perform a full inspection and if engineers find any issues with design, the subcontractor will be required to fix those problems.
