ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- It's a tragedy that happened not once but twice.
Police say about midnight Sunday morning, 49-year-old Christian Schroom was struck on Anastasia Boulevard multiple times. One person hit him followed by a second. Both of them left. Schroom died.
"They have an obligation to pull over and render aid, and obviously notify police. Neither of them left," Officer Chris Miller said.
Schroom's bike was found lying nearby undamaged. Police's goal is to find any surveillance video or witnesses from that night.
Neighbors are also trying to piece together the puzzle.
"It's really sad. Riding around if you don't have a vehicle. Getting around. People just need to watch out what they're doing and driving," Nicole Kirk said.
According to police, Schroom has lived in the area for about five years. He's from Michigan, has no local family and did everything he was supposed to as a cyclist Sunday morning.
He had a bright orange jacket on and reflectors on his bike.
"We used to see him ride his bike. He's been riding around some time in the morning and at night," Kirk continued.
Officer Chris Miller says the St. Augustine Police Department is on the hunt for more clues and most importantly: the people who hit Schroom. He encourages anyone who thinks they can help to speak up.
"We're asking if anybody knows any information, please contact St. Augustine Police. Those who've seen or heard something can come call us," he said.
If caught, the responsible drivers will most likely face vehicular homicide.
