ST AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- The sights and sounds of Newtown are still fresh in the minds of educators.
Like many school districts across the country, St. Johns County has stepped up security measures in result.
"Obviously have increased our law enforcement presence in the schools. We've increased our communication protocols," Dr. Joe Joyner said.
Superintendent Joyner spoke about school safety earlier this week in Tallahassee. He says it was an honor...and good dialogue for a topic that's gaining steam.
Thursday afternoon, he joined with principals from across the County to talk about emergency plans and security officers.
Deputies from the Sheriff's Office even did a slideshow presentation.
"I think they've done a great job of doing background checks and making sure they know who comes in and out of the schools all the time," Heather Coggins said.
Dr. Joyner says as things play out with funding and other initiatives-- he wants parents to know they're working to keep their kids safe every day.
"We pay attention to safety a lot and we're reviewing what we can do additionally," he said.
