ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- It is a rare occurrence but twice in history on the same date snow has coated the ground in parts of St. Johns County.
Saturday’s “snowfall” happened to be of the manmade variety at Durbin Creek Elementary. The school held its fifth "Durbin Creek Cares Snow Much" fundraiser. Over 12 tons of snow was created to give children the opportunity to play in the white stuff. Proceeds of Saturday’s Durbin Creek’s snow day benefited the Relay for Life, Dreams Come True, the Donovin Darius Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House.
While it was a little too warm for natural snow to fall, the same cannot be said for what happened 62 years ago.
Children and adults, in St. Augustine and points southward, played in 2 inches of snow that coated the ground and turned the area into a winter wonderland.
According to the National Weather Service, snow fell as far to the south as Central Florida back on Feb. 2, 1951.
