JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The public will weigh in Tuesday night on whether to ban concerts at Metro Park. City council members are welcoming public input at their weekly meeting.
The topic has garnered protest and support after councilman Don Redman introduced legislation to ban loud concerts from the popular venue.
Sylvia Wilkinson spends each day in her South Shores backyard admiring the beautiful scenery.
"It's right on the river, I love it. It's my little corner of heaven on Earth."
But Wilkinson says her scenic slice of heaven is going south, thanks to live concerts at Metro Park.
Neighbors in St. Nicholas and South Shores are complaining of window-rattling noise. Wilkinson says when a big show comes to town, the annoyance is an all-day affair.
"They go all day long and ... at night the windows in the house go 'boom, boom, boom' and you can hear the screaming and the loud noise. It's extremely distracting all day long," said Wilkinson.
A grassroots campaign is under way to ensure nothing changes at the venue. Opponents of the measure are circulating a petition which has now reached more than 6,300 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon.
The public is invited to weigh in Tuesday night at City Council chambers at 117 W. Duval St.
A vote on the issue isn't expected until next month.
