Suspect changes plea in football fan slashing
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A local Navy veteran has changed his plea from not guilty to guilty in the deadly stabbing at Fionn MacCool's Irish Pub at the Jacksonville Landing. Matthew Hinson now admits he killed William Pettry.
Pettry is from Illinois and was in town to watch the Jaguars vs. Bears football game. Detectives say Hinson originally admitted to killing Pettry in a jealous rage.
Police say Hinson slashed Pettry after he saw Pettry and another man talking to Hinson's wife. Detectives then say Hinson put the knife back in his pocket and walked out of the pub. He was pulled over and arrested moments later.
A public defender tells Action News Hinson is a graduate of Orange Park High School and served five years in the Navy.
Hinson is scheduled to be sentenced on May 28.
