JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Fire Department responded to an apartment fire on the Westside early Monday morning. JFRD says the fire began at the Canterbury Gardens Apartments shortly after midnight.

The Red Cross said ten families - about 36 people - were being put up in hotels after being forced out of their homes.

Neighbors awoke just after midnight to people screaming outside. "My roommate said the house is on fire, everybody needs to get out," said fire victim Andrea Decker.

Firefighters believe the fire started behind a stove in one of the bottom units. Right now, they're estimating $600,000 in damage.

JFRD says although the apartments are ruined, no one was hurt.

"I thank God that everybody got out safe and that no one was hurt," said fire victim Victoria Smith. "Red cross is going to assist us temporarily. Pretty much I'm going to just have to deal with this day by day," said fire victim Melissa Brockington.

As for those 36 people, JFRD has set up a shelter so they have a place to stay and food to eat.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
