JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Thousands of runners crossed the start line racing to see the end. They ran to see the end of the race, and hopefully one day, the end of breast cancer.
"My aunt has fought breast cancer. So I ran it for her," said Colleen Jahns.
This is the sixth year the "26.2 with Donna National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer" has been held. And for six years breast cancer supporters, survivors and the ones left behind joined together to hit the streets.
"People could necessarily just write a check to fund research. But to fund research and run marathon, you get to go out and have some fun with other people," said David Hulstrom.
This year the race started in Ponte Vedra and ended in front of Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Most of the money raised will also go to Mayo's breast cancer research.
Jane Graves hopes the research will keep others from losing their mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law too. "That obviously made a huge impact on my life, but it got me through the race," said Graves.
The money raised will also help breast cancer patients with their living expenses. "We can fight breast cancer," said cancer survivor, Joyce Hoffman. It's a battle every runner fought one step at a time.
This year former Jaguar owners Wayne and Delores Weaver matched any team's contribution that raised at least $10,000 for breast cancer research.
