PALATKA, Fla. -- Deputies in Palatka arrested three people for stealing a giant purple chicken statue.

The 9-foot tall aluminum statue was taken from a home on East State Road 100 on Tuesday morning.

The homeowner said while getting ready for work, he heard a lot of screaming and hollering coming from behind his house.

He went out back to see the 600-pound chicken being dragged behind a truck. The thieves only made it to the end of the road where they unhitched the chicken statue and drove off.

Police arrested the three people based on eyewitness accounts and surveillance video of the property.

The trio, identified as Darrin Edwards, Tyler Jones and James Smith, were located the following day. Edwards, who is currently on probation, admitted to the offense and was arrested and charged with violation of probation and grand theft. Edwards is currently being held in the Putnam County Jail without bond.

Jones and Smith also confessed to the incident and they were arrested and charged with one count of grand theft. Jones and Smith were each booked and released on a $1,004 bond.

"The chicken is valued at $2300.00 and sustained a broken leg, broken claw and there was extensive damage to one side," said Detective Shannon Depew.
