JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Traffic homicide detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are investigating an accident that has left a 17-year-old girl dead.

Detective Robert Peck says a man was driving a Ford mini-van Northbound on Barnes Rd. at 2:40 am, when he ran the stop sign at Kennerly Rd. and into the bedroom of a teenage girl.

Police believe she was in bed asleep at the time. The girl was taken to UF and Shands Hospital where she died.  She's been identified as 17-year-old Janay Jackson.

The driver was traveling alone and was also taken to Shands with serious injuries, but he is not in critical condition according to detectives at the scene.

Police say it was not raining and the roads were not wet at the time of the accident. They are investigating if alcohol and speed are factors.

The girl's parents were home at the time, but do not have any injuries.

Detectives tell Action News it will take most of the day to remove the van from the home, and to be sure the home is structurally sound.

Multiple neighbors report this type of accident has occurred in the home previously, and that a barrier wall was added to protect the home, but was not complete on the side of the home that was hit Tuesday morning.
