Excessive breast size can cause pain in your breasts, neck, shoulders, or back. Breast reduction can help improve or eliminate your symptoms. Traditionally, reduction surgery removes both excess breast tissue and skin. One choice leaves a scar that circles your nipple, reaches from your nipple to the fold beneath your breast, and from side-to-side beneath your breast. Scars can range from as narrow as a pencil line to as wide as a pencil. Recently, ultrasonic liposuction has been successfully used for breast reduction. Liposuction requires only a single small incision beneath each breast. Because this is a relatively new technique, there's a concern that liposuction could change your risk of breast cancer. While you may be able to go home the day of surgery, most patients stay overnight. You can usually return to work within seven to ten days, but complete healing requires a full year.
