In the yard or garden, spiders are among the most beneficial creatures around. They feed on insects that cause problems to plants. Indoors, however, they present problems of their own. While only two of the 25,000 species in this country are actually dangerous, many others can cause painful bites if they're cornered or frightened. The brown recluse (REH-CLOOSE) and black widow are the two to watch out for. Their bites can be fatal if not treated, and pose a particular threat to small children. They like to hide in dark corners of garages or closets. They should never be approached except by a trained pest control specialist. The best way to get spiders out of your home is by completely controlling the insects they feed on. Once their source of food disappears, they'll go back outside where there's an ample supply. If you do find what you suspect may be one of the poisonous varieties, call a professional pest control service to arrange for its removal.
