All home and business owners are responsible for taking reasonable steps to prevent an accident occurring on their property. This includes taking precautions to prevent slip and fall accidents resulting from slippery paths and steps caused by rain, snow or ice. Shop owners are generally responsible for clearing ice and snow from public access areas, for example in front of their stores. Homeowners can be held liable for slip and fall injuries that occur on their garage entrances or pathways. Homeowners and other property owners generally carry liability insurance to protect them in the event that an accident takes place on their property. Business owners, especially those whose businesses are open to the general public, are particularly responsible for taking precautions to prevent accidents by removing snow and ice from any area to which the public has access. Warning signs must be placed to inform visitors of any potential danger. If you've been injured in a slip and fall accident on someone's property, and you can show that reasonable precautionary steps weren't taken, you may be able to claim for damages. These damages include compensation for medical expenses, loss of income, and for pain and suffering.
