SOUTH FLORIDA — A blind south Florida man is being called a hero because he rescued a woman from a burning apartment, and helped put out the flames.
"Whatever your disability may be, just give it your best and don't give up," Tommy Barber said.
Barber said he was walking with a friend in Fort Pierce when they both smelled smoke.
He quickly ran into the smoke-filled apartment and pulled a sleeping woman out.
Barber then went back inside.
"I say, 'Susan, let's go in. Now, show me where the fire's at. You direct the hose and I'm going pull the pin and squeeze the fire extinguisher,'" said Barber.
Thanks to past firefighting training, Barber said he knew what to do.
Firefighters said they found food was left on the stove, which is what started the fire.
