BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- They may be a small church, but this Sunday they have a big message. "We do not want to see this again," preached Reverend Ken Adkins.

Adkins is the pastor of Greater Dimensions Christian Fellowship in Brunswick. And he is taking responsibility for the 17-year-old accused of shooting Sherry West and killing her 13-month old son. "I apologize. I put it on my shoulders as a pastor and as a leader that we did not do more," he said.

And he wants churches to monitor at-risk students using a program Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford created. "If the state can give a child a probation officer, they should be able to give a child a pastor," Adkins said.

17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins and his grandfather were once members of Greater Dimensions. Sunday the congregation all prayed together, laying hands on every teenager and child, so they wouldn't fall into a life of crime.

"We are going to do everything in our power to make sure that this does not happen again," said Adkins.

He knows this won't do much to ease Sherry West's pain, but he says it will help keep other mothers like her from becoming victims to senseless crimes.

West told Action News that she is leaving Brunswick to move back with her family in South New Jersey. The St Vincent's De Paul Society is setting up an account to help her with moving expenses.
